No matter what side of the fence you’re on, if you have a child that you have to maneuver through a “school choice program”, the emotions surrounding the topic run high.

In Florida, students K-12 and parents are afforded the right to educational choice. School choice allows all families to make decisions about where their children will receive their primary education from a variety of public schools and programs.

All children are different and have different needs and different talents. School choice programs allow parents to seek out the best educational opportunities for their children without a financial penalty.

One reason school choice has become a major point of contention is due to the fact that there are many options in education today. Districts offer a wide range of school types, and parents are faced with choices that they may not have had just a few decades earlier.
Public schools, Charter schools, and Magnet schools may offer the same curriculum but the programs offered are sometimes vastly different.

As a parent of two elementary school age children, when we first moved here and were introduced to the idea of “school choice”, it was an intriguing yet confusing concept.
In the end, we were happy that we ended up with the school we had chosen, but we would have gotten that school due to proximity to our home address. Now, as we start getting closer to having to “choose” again for middle school, our 10 year old is filled with angst that she perhaps may not “get her choice”, and the friendships that she has made throughout elementary school will fade away.

It wasn’t too long ago when I remember playing with the kids in our neighborhood rode the bus and went to the same school with the kids in our neighborhood. With school choice,
although most schools in the Cape Coral area are A rated, it makes little difference to young children who are trying to maintain relationships. Some parent’s that I’ve spoken to actually did not receive their choice but rather their third or fourth one down on the list. But in the end they were pleased .Fortunately, through research we know when our window to apply for our choice/s is, we’ll stay diligently on top of it before the school year starts, and the ladies at the school choice office here in Lee County are so very nice and helpful.

It’s important to become well informed about the school choice process in order to make sure your child and YOU can feel confident starting new school year in Cape Coral.
